E36 Flex Disk (Giubo)
The e36 is my one of our favorite chassis. We have been working on these for many years and now they are more affordable than ever. With that said, these cars are old (20+ years old) and need maintenance that the previous owner may have neglected.
For this e36 our customer complained about poor acceleration and noise coming from the center of the car, beneath the transmission. We drove the car, confirmed the noise, and got it on our lift. Once in the air, we noticed the flex disc or giubo was almost destroyed.
The flex disc is a coupler that connects the output shaft of the transmission to the drive shaft. This crucial piece of rubber dampens vibration in the drive train. With a worn flex disc you may notice an audible thud and lack of power to the wheels. If the flex disc fails completely the drive shaft (pictured above) can literally separate from the transmission.
Here is another look at the new and destroyed flex disc / giubo. Notice the cords are showing on the failed part.
With the new flex disc installed this e36 is now ready to battle Los Angeles traffic. For a complete inspection of your BMW, MINI or Rolls-Royce give us a call or email to schedule an appointment.
